NATCHEZ — With a tough district opponent coming up next week, Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said he was really hoping to play rival St. Aloysius Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately, Friday night’s stormy weather made that impossible.

The Green Wave had to postpone their game against the Flashers due to the extremely wet Chester Willis Field.

“We made the decision after the storm came through last night,” Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said. “I went out there at about 4 (Saturday) evening and the dirt looks good, but the grass is what’s so bad. Right field and between the pitchers mound and second base is still holding water.”

Beesley said he was looking forward to playing St. Al, not just because they are a big rival, but because Cathedral needed to play tough competition before taking on district foe West Lincoln next week.

“It’s very frustrating for me and the kids,” Beesley said. “This was one of those games the kids look forward to all year. We were looking to get a game in before playing West Lincoln next week, because they’ve got one of their better teams in awhile. Hopefully we’ll be ready now that we’ve lost this game.”

Friday night’s game against Bogue Chitto was also rained out, and will be made up on April 14. A makeup date has not been set for the St. Al game.

Cathedral wasn’t the only school that had to postpone a game on Saturday. Vidalia also had to move its game against Block to April 21 because of the wet conditions.

“That will give us four games that week with no pitching, which will be great,” Vidalia coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “We’ve lost five home games this year because of weather. That’s hurt us.”

Hoffpauir said while it may be frustrating, it’s just part of being a high school baseball coach.

“It’s typical,” Hoffpauir said. “This time of year you’re going to get (rain).”
