NATCHEZ — A vehicle burglary reported Sunday on Grant Avenue is the latest in a string of such burglaries in Natchez.
Grant Avenue resident Raymond Woodfork reported his .9 mm pistol missing from his Chevrolet Silverado truck, Natchez Police Department Sgt. Craig Godbold said.
Woodfork noticed the gun missing Sunday morning, but an exact time the gun was stolen could not be determined, Godbold said.
The doors to the truck were left unlocked for a period of time on Saturday, and Godbold said, since there was no sign of forced entry into the vehicle, it is likely the gun was stolen then.
“Most of these types of crimes are crimes of opportunity,” Godbold said. “There is an item laying out on a seat, they see it, grab it and go.
“It’s just that fast.”
The serial number for the gun has been entered into the National Crime Information Center database that will allow it be identified should it show up elsewhere.
“NCIC registers the weapon nationwide as being stolen,” Godbold said. “Any item that is stolen and has a serial number can be entered into the database.”
Godbold said Woodfork allowed an individual into his house on Saturday, but said there are no suspects in the case.
An investigator has been assigned to the case, and anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.
