VICKSBURG — The Cathedral tennis team had a banner day on the courts Monday, as all seven of its teams advanced to the finals of the Class 1A South State tennis tournament.
The finals of the tournament are today in Vicksburg.
All of Cathedral’s teams advanced through the first day of the tournament quite easily.
“This is the first time (in several years) that we have taken every team to the finals,” Cathedral tennis coach Marla Beard said. “It really was a good day for us. The boys singles had tough second round and mixed doubles had a tough second round, but besides that we had pretty easy wins.”
In No. 1 girls singles, Madeline Beard got a bye through the first round and then defeated St. Aloysius 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
In No. 1 boys singles, Julian Stubbs defeated Bogue Chitto 6-1, 6-3 in the first round and St. Al 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.
The Green Wave’s doubles teams fared just as well.
In No. 1 girls doubles, Davis Beard and Cami Willard received a bye through the first round before destroying St. Al 6-1, 6-1 in the second round.
The No. 2 girls doubles team of Sarah Beth Willard and Taylor Beesley did even better, receiving a first round bye and then blanking West Lincoln 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
In No. 1 boys doubles, Adam Blackwell and Dwain Perkins received a first round bye and then defeated Pisgah 6-2, 6-0 in the second round while the No. 2 boys doubles team of Josh Gamberi and William Wilson defeated Bogue Chitto 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and beat West Lincoln 6-1, 6-1 in round two.
The mixed doubles team of Andrew Carter and Wesley Callaway rounded out Cathedral’s perfect day with a 6-2, 6-1 first round victory over Bogue Chitto and then a 6-2, 7-6 win over St. Al in the second round.
Each of Cathedral’s seven teams will play Sacred Heart of Hattiesburg in the finals today except for the No. 2 boys doubles team of Gamberi and Wilson, who will face off against the St. Aloysius Flashes.
