COLUMBUS –— A candlelight tour through historic grave sites may seem like a setting for a Hollywood terror film, but one such tour takes place far from California. The setting is Columbus. The site is Friendship Cemetery. And Natchezian Katherine Timm is among the young performers who will entertain and inform thousands of visitors along the way.

Timm and other students from the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science are taking part in “Tales from the Crypt,” winner of the 2005 Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and national finalist for The History Channel’s “Save Our History” Award.

“Tales” takes place in conjunction with the annual Columbus Pilgrimage.

Last fall, 49 MSMS students began researching and rehearsing the lives of Mississippians buried in Friendship Cemetery Nine of the students were chosen to introduce their characters in “Tales from the Crypt.”

Timm researched Susan Alyda Young Chambers. Chambers was the daughter of George Hampton Young, builder of Waverley Plantation, which is a National Historic Landmark. Chambers was married in the parlor of Waverley in 1856.

Timm is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David Timm of Natchez.

The students will perform again from 7 to 9:30 p.m today.
