County, like all, must abide by rules

It is difficult to believe, yet no big surprise, that county leaders have done it again.

With an unabashed arrogance, at least one supervisor seems intent on not only remaining ignorant of the law but possibly breaking it.

All in the name of trying to save a buck — and likely not much more — Supervisor S.E. “Spanky” Felter has devised a plan to break city zoning laws, skirt the system and plant a trailer in one of the area’s prettiest and most visible locations.

The county has already cleared a plot of its land — which happens to fall within city limits — for a donated trailer. Felter plans to move the road department’s offices into the trailer at the Liberty Road bridge by May 1.

But City Planner John “Rusty” Lewis says such a plan is clearly in violation of city code.

Not only is Felter ignoring city code, he failed to follow proper procedure by not submitting plans for the site.

It’s nothing new, really. Felter and two other supervisors cut funding to the Economic Development Authority just a few months ago without bothering to read the law that prohibited the move.

Prior to that, the board stopped paying two school crossing guards simply to get $7,000 off the county payroll. The board told the school district to handle payment of the employees, without first checking the law. Turns out the school board can’t legally pay anyone to work on county roads. State law prohibits it.

And time and time again, the supervisors have had illegal meetings, locking out the public to their shenanigans.

The fact that some county supervisors neither know nor care to read the law is neither funny nor acceptable. It’s downright frightening.
