STRINGER — The Cathedral Lady Wave softball team saw its outstanding season come to an end in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Wave dropped two games to Stringer, losing the first one 4-2 before falling in Game 2 8-1.

The first game was a pitchers’ duel between Cathedral’s Mollie Devening and Stringer’s Aaron Herrington.

The game was tied 1-1 before Stringer broke through with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Cathedral scored a run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2, but Stringer gave themselves some breathing room with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

“We played really tough that first game,” Cathedral coach Gary Blackwell said. “We had some errors at crucial times that really killed us. I thought we were going to come out (with a win), but it just didn’t happen.”

Ginny Daggett was 2-for-3 in the game and Beth Fortenbery had a triple.

The second game wasn’t nearly as close, as six Cathedral errors derailed the Lady Wave’s chance at victory.

Stringer scored at least one run in every inning except the fourth, and put the game away with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Laura Perilloux took the loss in the circle while Herrington once again was the winning pitcher for Stringer.

“(The Game 1 loss) took the wind out of us,” Blackwell said. “We gave all we had in that first game, I think we kind of ran out of fire in the second game. Laura pitched a good game, the errors just got us.”

Despite the playoff loss, Blackwell said he was very proud of the way the team played this year.

“It took us a little while to get it all together, but we gelled as a team when we needed to, when district started,” Blackwell said. “This is a great group of kids. They are what team is all about. I’m very proud of them.”
