Cathedral wins in round one

NOXAPATER — Home-field advantage apparently means nothing to the Cathedral baseball team.
The Green Wave traveled to defeat Noxapater 18-0 and 13-0 in a doubleheader in the first round of the MHSAA Class A state playoffs Friday.
In playing a doubleheader, Cathedral gave up a Saturday home game, but coach Craig Beesley chose to play two away because of inclement weather.
“We’ve never won at that field before so I was kind of hesitant to do it,” he said. “But we made a good decision with the weather coming in early tonight. If all the other schools have to push back their games to early in the week, it could affect their pitching rotations for the second series. So we did the right thing.”
The Green Wave did all the right things against Noxapater, including scoring 18 runs on 13 hits in the first game with seven different batters recording doubles.
Dylan White and Cole Mann were both 2-for-3 with doubles for Cathedral, and Trevor Farmer, Daniel Jenkins, Colin Hammond, Daniel Huffines and Hunter Foster also recorded extra-base hits.
“We really hit the ball well,” Beesley said. “They played pretty good defense against us, but we hit the ball. Everybody, one through nine in the lineup, was swinging the bat nicely.”
Preston Edwards (10-0) pitched the entire game, allowing three hits and striking out 11 with just one walk.
“That first inning, after we got that big lead, I was worried about him losing his focus,” Beesley said. “But he came out and did really well. I wanted to get him some live action, because we’ll have a week’s layoff before the next game.”
Edwards also recorded two home runs in game two. But his were not the only long balls in the game.
Caleb Johnson, Tyler Ballard and Jenkins knocked balls over the wall as well.
“Preston got us started the first inning with a two-run shot, and then he followed that with a three-run shot in the second inning,” Beesley said. “Everybody else fell in there behind him. Hopefully we can keep that going into the second round.”
White recorded the win in game two, pitching four innings and allowing three hits. Tyler Morrison pitched the fifth inning to close the game.
“I thought our pitchers did a good job of throwing strikes, which is what we wanted to make sure we did today,” Beesley said.
The Green Wave will host the first game of round two, although their opponent is still undetermined. Most teams opted to play game two today, and third games, if needed, will be played Monday.
But Beesley said all signs point to St. Aloysius in the second round. The Flashes beat French Camp on Friday.
“It will be interesting to see if they get their game in (today) or not,” Beesley said. “They’ve scouted us a couple times this season. Maybe I’ll get to Vicksburg and watch them play.”
