Habitat having first women’s build day

NATCHEZ — Women not afraid to get dirty or break a finger nail will be swinging hammers and tightening screws in Natchez on Saturday.

The Adams County chapter of Habitat for Humanity is participating in the National Women’s Build Day for the first time. Habitat secretary Duncan McFarlane said the female focused workday has been around for several years, but has never been tried in Natchez.

“It has been used for years (in other places) as a way to recruit new volunteers,” McFarlane said. “We hope we can get a few people who see what Habitat is about and come back on a regular basis.”

The work begins at 8 a.m. and typically last until 1 p.m., but McFarlane said volunteers don’t have to commit for the entire day.

“Volunteers tend to come and go throughout the day,” he said. “But if we can get 20 or 25 people out there for four hours, we can get a lot of work done.”

And just showing up at the worksite at 34 Claiborne St. is all that is required. McFarlane said workers need no previous experience or equipment to lend a helping hand.

“Everything they will need is there,” McFarlane said. “(Volunteers) don’t need to bring anything — just show up and we will put you with someone and put you to work.”

The current house is the 13th Habitat house to be built in Natchez. McFarlane said he expects Saturdays’ workload to include putting in the floor and some painting.

Workers have to be 16 years old for insurance purposes, McFarlane said.

“I’ve got a lot of hammers ready,” he said.

The local goal is to have a workforce comprised of 75 percent women.
