Hall of Fame tire maker dies at 88

Natchez — James A. Walsh, former leader at Armstrong Rubber Company, died on April 20.
Walsh was 88.
Walsh helped Armstrong become the sixth largest tire manufacturer in the country.
After a career spanning more than 43 years, Walsh retired from Armstrong in 1985. The following year he was inducted into the Tire Industry Hall of Fame.
In 1963, Walsh managed the Natchez plant during the height of the civil rights movement.
From Natchez, he became the company’s vice president in charge of manufacturing.
In 1971 he became president and finally in l980, he achieved the title of chairman and CEO of Armstrong, as well as chairman of Blackstone and Copolymer Rubber.
Walsh spent his retirement years at his family farm in Sparks, Md. Husband of Sandra Walsh and father to six children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, he also leaves behind two sisters and countless extended family and friends.
