The smiles spoke volumes at the Steckler Multipurpose Center Wednesday night. And the late Dr. David Steckler, whose name marks that building, certainly would have been proud of the celebration going on inside.

More than 60 Natchez High seniors were honored as Mississippi Scholars. It was the highest number of scholars since Natchez schools first began the program three years ago.

Mississippi’s program is part of a national scholars program that encourages high school students to complete more rigorous coursework, meet high attendance standards, maintain good grades and participate in community service activities.

For their accomplishments, the students earn recognition at graduation and become more likely to be eligible for some scholarships and grants.

The underlying purpose, however, isn’t about earning a certificate, it’s about instilling a set of values that will help set high school students on the right course as they enter into adult life.

Research shows that students who complete such coursework and show such initiative, are much more likely to succeed at college and in the work force.

We’re thrilled by the expansive growth of the Mississippi Scholars Program in the Natchez-Adams School District and we’re proud of each and every Mississippi Scholar graduate.

And we know Dr. Steckler — a long-time school board member — would be just as proud.

We have the full faith that their hard work over the last several years will pay off greatly as they move into the next phases of their lives.
