VIDALIA, La. — A trio from Natchez allegedly tried to get away with stealing approximately $1,000 worth of goods from the Vidalia Walmart on Friday by unsuccessfully eluding capture by police.
Jarvis Washington, 49, of Natchez was identified as the getaway driver and charged with theft, aggravated flight from an officer, no proof of insurance and no driver’s license.
Tyandra Batteaste, 47, of Natchez is charged with theft after attempting to take over $600 worth of food from the grocery department and Derrick Bingham, 40, of Natchez is charged with taking at least two battery jump boxes worth over $300 from the automotive department of the Walmart in Vidalia, authorities said.
These three allegedly went on a stealing spree on Friday, Jan. 17, at approximately 12:50 p.m. Two were reportedly dropped off at the store and then Batteaste went through the checkout area of the grocery section while Bingham went through the automotive section where each exited the store with their ill-gotten gains and got inside of a waiting getaway vehicle driven by Washington.
Vidalia Police Sargent David Washington spotted the vehicle as it was exiting Walmart onto Carter Street, heading towards Natchez. David Washington activated his blue lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle but the driver failed to pull over. Lt. Terence Williams and officer Noah Foreman joined the pursuit, which continued until the vehicle was blocked in by officers in the drive through of Tensas State Bank.
All three suspects were taken into custody and transported to the Vidalia Police Department for booking and their vehicle was towed.
“We’re extremely grateful these suspects didn’t injure anyone as they attempted to elude capture in such a reckless and careless manner,” said Chief Joey Merrill. “Our officers were able to respond to this call quickly and leaned on their training and expertise to bring this case to a quick resolve. Our officers are our greatest asset.”
