FERRIDAY, La. — Caleb Ellis threw four touchdown passes for Ferriday High School, but the Trojans’ defense could not slow down Ouachita Christian School’s ground game as the Eagles took a 56-28 win Friday night to remain undefeated in LHSAA District 2-2A.

It was Senior Night at Melz Field and senior quarterback Ellis tried his best to lead Ferriday to an upset win over one of the top teams in Class 2A. Three of those touchdowns went to junior wide receiver Desmen Jefferson. But it would not be enough on this night.

“Offensively, we showed how explosive we can be. But we took a couple of steps back on defense,” Trojans assistant coach DeVante Scott said. “We had a few players out, but that’s no excuse. We gave up some big plays that we shouldn’t have. Lack of discipline. Lack of focus. We’ll correct that this week.”

Not only that, but the defense gave up a combined seven touchdown runs the Eagles’ tandem of senior running back Makin Lenard and sophomore running back Jude Turner. Lenard had touchdown runs of 37 yards, three yards, and one yard. Turner had TD runs of 11 yards, two yards, 22 yards, and one yard.

The only touchdown through the air was late in the second quarter on a 40-yard pass from Luke Vidrine to Ridge Coats. That gave the Eagles (9-0, 6-0) a commanding 36-14 halftime lead.

“Offensive line picked up the blitz well and gave Caleb some time to throw the ball. But we’ve got to get a run game,” Scott said. “They gave us the pass and we went with the pass.”

Ferriday (6-3, 3-3) wraps up its regular season next Friday when the Trojans play at district foe Rayville High School at 7 p.m. Friday.
“We’ve got to get healthy and get ready for the last game. Then we’ll find out where we’re seeded in the playoffs,” Scott said.
