NATCHEZ — Thursday, Oct. 31, is Halloween and there is a lot scheduled to happen in the Miss-Lou to celebrate it safely.

However, as if the night were not spooky enough, a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms is in the forecast as of Monday afternoon.

The Town of Vidalia has posted trick-or-treating hours as 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. That is not expected to change, though individual organizations and groups may have their own set time to celebrate, said Mayor Buz Craft.

“I didn’t know it was up to me to decide when trick or treating was when I came into office,” Craft said. “When I was growing up, we celebrated Halloween no matter what the weather was. If it rained it rained. Oh well. For now, we’re playing it by ear. If the rain comes earlier in the day and clears up by evening, we’ll leave it alone. If I must make a call, it will probably be Wednesday afternoon.”

Craft said 400 or more area school children are expected to visit the Vidalia Municipal Complex Wednesday morning when the forecast is clear, where trick or treat or trunk or treat activities will be hosted by Vidalia City Hall, Police and Fire departments.

In Natchez, Downtown Natchez Alliance is sponsoring Trick or Treat for Little Feet on Thursday from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

“As of now, we are keeping trick or treat as scheduled,” said DNA Director Kevin Miers. “If the weather turns out too bad and we have to cancel, then we’ll reschedule.”

This annual trick-or-treat is led by Downtown Natchez merchants and takes place throughout the downtown business district.

This coincides with Trunk R’ Treat with the Grinch hosted by Natchez Parks and Recreation on the Natchez Bluff from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., located on Broadway Street from Madison to Franklin streets. Those who plan on decorating a vehicle or table to pass out candy need to register at citynatchez.recdesk.com/Community/Program. There is no fee to participate.

The registration deadline is Oct. 30.

Many Miss-Lou church groups, such as First Baptist Church in Vidalia and the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Natchez, welcome community participants to their Halloween Trunk or Treat or fall festivals.

FBC Vidalia’s Trunk or Treat is scheduled to last from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Pilgrim MBC’s is scheduled to last from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
