JOSEPH, LA – Funeral services for Zelda Renee Bowman, 53, of Prairieville, LA formerly of St. Joseph, LA will be held on Oct. 26, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Tensas High School in St. Joseph. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Cemetery in St. Joseph with Pastor Donald Scott, Sr, and Minister Roy Bowman, Sr. officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from noon until service time at the school.
Miss Bowman, daughter of Lawrence, Sr. and Lucille Barnes Bowman was born in Newellton, LA, and passed away at 10:10 p.m. at the Carpenter House St. Joseph Hospice in Baton Rouge, LA, surrounded by her loved ones.
“Nae” was baptized at an early age at the St. Lena Baptist Church. She shined brightly on and off the basketball court, earning the nickname “Lefty” not just for her left-handedness but also for her ability to make the net sing. A standout at Davidson High School, she continued her athletic journey at Hinds Junior College, where she received a scholarship and was later inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. She later attended Texas Southern University, demonstrating her dedication and passion for the game. Throughout her life, she held various jobs, but she was most known for her unwavering spirit and deep love and devotion for her family.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved children, Ashley Jackson of Baton Rouge and Jason Bowman of Las Vegas, NV. She is also survived by her 10 siblings, Bennie Bowman (Earthalene) of Las Vegas; Eligah Bowman (Letitia), Bobby Bowman, Sr. (Edna)of Baton Rouge; Charles Bowman of Detroit, MI; Larry Bowman, Sr. (Lydia); Robert Bowman (Kiasha) all of Baton Rouge; Terry Guy (Roe) of Greensburg, LA; Roy Bowman of St. Joseph, LA; Linda Bowman Wilson (Fredrick, Sr.) of Prairieville; Maurice Bowman (Yvonne) of Shreveport, LA. Additionally, she is remembered fondly by her seven grandchildren, Jacoby Ford, Jr., Jamal Franklin, Jaylin Jackson, Arianna Jackson, Damon Toliver, III, Aryelle Toliver, Carllya Tucker, and her first great-granddaughter, Ta’Layah Reese.
Preceding her in death are her parents, and four siblings, Lawrence Bowman, Jr., Willie Bowman, Emma Bowman Hardin, and Debra Bowman Scott.
