NATCHEZ — Thursday evening’s Live@5 on the Natchez bluff also marked the beginning of the Natchez Balloon Festival while spreading Breast Cancer Awareness with the help of Merit Health Natchez.

“Heroes,” breast cancer survivors in the crowd were invited by Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson to stand on the bluff’s bandstand for the reading of the official proclamation to declare Thursday, Oct. 17, as “Paint Natchez Pink Day.”

“I am inspired by the heroes standing here,” Gibson said, noting those who’ve raised awareness including Monica Smith who last week spread awareness and raised funds with the 10th annual Monica’s Hope Cancer Awareness Walk.

“We are so grateful to celebrate those in our community who have survived cancer, those who’ve raised thousands and thousands of dollars to fight cancer and those who — even in our midst now, myself included — have lost loved ones to cancer. I truly believe there is no one here who has not been affected by this horrible disease. But hope is alive and that is this; that we are finding a cure,” Gibson said.

The evening continued with a balloon glow during Live@Five’s live music performance on the bluff.
