NATCHEZ — While one team saw its playoff chances, the other team pretty much saw its playoff chances come to an end Friday night when Cathedral High School played host to Centreville Academy at D’Evereux Stadium.

Even though it was Cathedral’s Senior Night as six seniors played perhaps their last home game for the Green Wave, the Centreville Academy Tigers took control of the game in the second half en route to a 35-21 come-from-behind win.

The Tigers’ running game, led by running backs Garret Jeansonne and Liam Schwartz as well as fullback Matthew Wells, controlled the pace of the game and limited the number of possessions for the Green Wave’s offense.

“We were able to run the ball and kept the ball away from them,” Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman said. “The line blocked well. Both running backs ran the ball yard. Our quarterback (Kayde Redmond) did a good job running the offense.”

Wells had a seven-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7 with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter. Cathedral opened up the scoring on a 3-yard TD run by Fred Lane at the 7:41 mark of the opening quarter.

After Tralyn Cusic threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Lee with 11:50 left in the second quarter, the Tigers methodically drove down the field on their next possession, which ended one a 1-yard touchdown run by Jeansonne at the 6:21 mark of the second quarter. Jack Mason’s extra point made it 14-14.

Lane scored on a nine-yard run with 2:00 left and Tristan Fondren’s third extra point of the game gave the Green Wave a 21-4 halftime lead. But that would be the last time that Cathedral would find the end zone.

“Second half, defense made some adjustments. The d’Biefense got some key stops. We got a pick-six that turned the momentum of the game in our favor. It was a big play for us,” Stutzman said.

That pick-six occurred in the third quarter when Peyton Toler picked off a pass by Cusic and returned it 34 yards to the house. The ensuing two-point conversion gave the Tigers a 28-21 lead. And that was not long after Schwartz went up the middle and past Cathedral’s defense for a 52-yard TD run at the 9:46 mark of that quarter. The Tigers added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

“It was a big win for us for the power points in the playoffs,” Stutzman said.

Centreville Academy (4-5) plays at Manchester Academy next Friday at 7 p.m. Cathedral (3-7) returns to MAIS District 3-5A play next Friday at 7 p.m. for the regular-season finale at district and cross-town rival Adams County Christian School.
