MANGHAM, La. — What was supposed to have been a battle of two of the top teams in LHSAA District 2-2A turned into just the opposite as the Mangham High School Dragons defeated the Ferriday High School Trojans 35-6 on Friday night.
Earlier in the week, Ferriday assistant coach DeVante Scott said that since it was also Mangham’s homecoming game, he was hoping the Trojans would avenge the Dragons’ win in their homecoming game at Melz Field a year ago. That would not be the case as it turned out.
“We laid down. Couldn’t keep the ball off the ground,” Scott said. “They’re tough. They’re what we expected them to be and we didn’t answer.”
Mangham (5-1, 3-0) scored on a touchdown pass with about five minutes left in the first quarter and a touchdown run midway through the second quarter for a 14-0 Dragons lead at halftime.
A pair of touchdown runs in the third quarter helped the Dragons push their lead to 28-0. Ferriday finally got on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter on a two-yard pass from Caleb Ellis to Taevion Edwards, but the Trojans still trailed 28-6.
Then with less than a minute remaining in the game, Mangham scored on a fumble return for a touchdown to put the finishing touches on a big win for the Dragons.
“They controlled the line of scrimmage. If you can’t get the ball to the quarterback, you can’t get the open plays,” Scott said. “We played well at the end of the game.
