FERRIDAY, La. — For the second week in a row, Delta Charter School got off to a surprising slow start and trailed Delhi High School 28-14 by the end of the first quarter of the Storm’s homecoming game on Friday night.

But once the second half started, it was all Delta Charter as the Storm reeled off 36 points to rally for a 50-34 win over the upset-minded Delhi High Bears in the LHSAA District 2-1A opener for both teams.

“It was a good game. We started out a little slow. This week it was homecoming,” Storm head coach Blake Wheeler said. “Like I said before, I don’t like homecoming week. Too much of a distraction. They forget about football on Friday night.”

Still trailing by that same score at the half, it was time for someone to ignite a spark into Delta Charter so it would make sure that Delhi (1-5, 0-1) would not leave with a victory.

“After a fiery halftime speech by our quarterback, Will Wiley, and our defensive coordinator, Richy Spears, everybody was fired up,” Wheeler said. Part of it was heart and the second part was the play-calling. Defense really stepped up. We came back in the second half and we were a little too much for them.”

Wheeler added that the Storm was not only the better-conditioned of the two teams, but also was a better disciplined team once they made the adjustments.

And as for how Wiley played overall, especially in the second half, Wheeler said, “In our eyes, Will Wiley became a legend tonight. He’s a helluva player and he’s a helluva man.”

Delta Charter (4-1, 1-0) next plays at district rival Tensas High School next Friday at 7 p.m.
