FERRIDAY, La. — The Ferriday High School Trojans will look to stay undefeated when they hit the road to Bastrop to take on the Beekman Charter School Tigers Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A match-up.

Kickoff between Ferriday (4-0, 1-0) and Beekman Charter (2-2, 0-1) is slated for 7 p.m. The Trojans are coming off a 50-32 homecoming and district-opening win over district newcomer Delhi Charter School. The Tigers fell on the road to Mangham High School 47-6.

This is also the first meeting between the two teams since Nov. 2, 2018, in which the Trojans rolled to a 44-0 win at home over the Tigers. Ferriday assistant coach DeVante Scott said the players will need to stay focused and dominate from the start.

“I want to come out from play one and dominate. I wish they would’ve come out in the second half how they played in the first half,” Scott said about last week’s game. “I know it’s a long ride and you’ve got to stay focused. We know everyone wants to run the ball on us.

“We played two teams in Delta Charter and Delhi Charter who wanted to run the ball on us. They were up to the challenge. Our linebackers answered the challenge. But Beekman Charter’s bigger than Delhi Charter.”

As for what Ferriday is working on in practice this week, Scott said, “We’re working on our conditioning. Eighty-five percent of our practice is conditioning. We work on plays after then. If you can think, if you can breathe, if you can keep your minds right, you stay (well-conditioned). We’re working on what we did wrong on defense against Delhi Charter. Offense, we’re working on a few things. We’re not changing our offense for nobody. We’re going to make you change for us.”

There are a few things about the Tigers that do concern Scott on each side of the ball, especially when it comes to their defense.

“Offensively, they’re athletic. They’re big and athletic. They have some speed. Defense, I’m pretty sure they preach 11 hats to the ball. They will come down and hit, especially their linebackers,” Scott said. “For our offense, stay with your blocks and give our backs a little crease to run. Our offense will try to make it hard on them.”

Scott said that Beekman Charter runs the veer offense with a two-receiver set led by senior Quin Morgan that’s very similar to what Delhi Charter ran last Friday night. Defensively, they Tigers run either a 3-4 or 3-5 defense depending on what they see across the line of scrimmage.

He then said that senior quarterback Caleb Ellis will need to have a big game on offense while junior linebacker Marion Smith and senior linebacker Lionel Scott Jr. will need to have another big game on defense for the Trojans to stay undefeated.

“Caleb, he’s been playing lights out. He’s been playing great. All the backs, they need to have a great game. Offensive line needs to have a great game,” Scott said. “Defensively, our interior defensive line. Marion had 16 tackles last week and Lionel had nine tackles. They need to help control the line of scrimmage.”
