Residents in Mississippi and Louisiana seeking to vote in the Nov. 5 general election have until the end of the day on Monday, Oct. 7, to register to vote in person.

Louisiana voters will register in person at their local Office of Motor Vehicles. They have until Oct. 15 to register online using the GeauVote online registration system at voterportal.sos.la.gov/VoterRegistration.

In Mississippi, Adams County Circuit Clerk Eva Givens said her office will be open from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday for those who cannot register to vote during weekday office hours.

“We have been having a mighty big turnout of those registering to vote,” Given said recently.

She said those who want to register to vote should bring a picture ID or a Mississippi driver’s license.

The Circuit Clerk’s Office is located in the Adams County Courthouse. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mississippi does not offer online voter registration, only mail-in or in-person registration.

The voter registration application is available for download here.

Nancy Loome, executive director of The Parents’ Campaign, an organization that supports public education, said, “As staunch supporters of public education, and as adults in a representative democracy, we have an obligation to do our part to elect public officials at every level of government who are committed to supporting and protecting our public schools. To do that, we must be registered to vote, and we must make it a habit to go to the polls on each and every election day.”

Many of the state’s school districts elect their school board members, though Adams County does not.

Loome said during routine voter roll maintenance, the registrations of lawful voters are mistakenly purged.

“We all should check regularly to ensure that our voter registration status is active, particularly those who occasionally skip a primary or general election,” she said.
