NATCHEZ — Hartfield Academy senior quarterback Cayman Tapper threw five touchdown passes, all of them in the first half, as the reigning MAIS Class 6A state champion Hawks defeated the Cathedral High School Green Wave last Friday night at D’Evereux Stadium.
Tapper threw two touchdown passes to junior wide receiver Bralan Womack, two to senior wideout Kenzy West, and one to senior wideout Sam Sheffield. His touchdown passing yards alone totaled 164 yards. He likely threw for well over 200 yards.
Offensively, Cathedral struggled to move the ball on Hartfield Academy’s stingy defense. Green Wave quarterback Tristan Fondren threw his first two interceptions of the season. One of the few positives for the Green Wave was that they did force a few turnovers. Tripp Wimberly had a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Owen Jordan had one interception.
The Hawks scored 21 points each in the first and second quarter. And when they went up 35-0 nearly midway through the second quarter, a running clock was used for the rest of the game – not just the second half itself.
It doesn’t get any easier for Cathedral (2-2) as it will travel to Amite, La. to take on Oak Forest Academy at 7 p.m. next Friday in the Green Wave’s MAIS District 3-5A opener.
