VIDALIA, La. — A man arrested last week for allegedly planting a hidden camera inside a bathroom at a Vidalia residence faces additional charges, including raping a child under 13 years old, after detectives uncovered evidence of the sexual abuse, according to a press release.
Joshua Smith, 40, was rebooked Thursday on the charges of first degree rape involving a victim under 13, two counts; crimes against nature involving a victim under 13, two counts; indecent behavior with juveniles involving a victim under 13; video voyeurism, 12 counts; and pornography involving juveniles under 13, six counts.
Smith had previously been arrested on Aug. 14 for 16 counts of pornography involving juveniles and 25 counts of video voyeurism.
On Aug. 9, the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office Cyber Crime Unit began investigating a complaint of a hidden camera set up where multiple juveniles were being filmed in a bathroom, authorities said.
After interviewing the witness, detectives submitted search warrants to electronic service providers, which authenticated the videos and helped identify Smith as a suspect.
A search warrant was then executed at his residence, at which time an electronic device was seized that contained videos of child sexual abuse material.
As the investigation continued, additional victims that were filmed in the bathroom of a Vidalia residence by way of hidden camera, as well as being sexually abused on more than one occasion, were identified. Detectives are working to process digital evidence, which can be time consuming with new evidence being recovered.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information regarding the investigation can contact the CPSO Cyber Crime Unit at (318) 437-0740 Ext. 409 or submit information online using the CPSO mobile app.
Anyone arrested is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
