FERRIDAY – Victor Pitre’ Vegas “Vic”, 90, passed away on Aug. 7, 2024, in Ferriday, Louisiana.

Vic was born on Oct. 12, 1933, to Paul and Olga Vegas in Westwego, LA. After attending Newman High School in New Orleans, Vic attended the University of South Louisiana in Lafayette, LA, where he was a member of the football, rodeo team and ROTC. He graduated with a degree in animal science.

A beautiful young lady from St. Joseph, LA caught his eye. He married the love of his life, Betty “Jane” Rives, on June 11, 1955, and the two were inseparable for seventy years. Vic enlisted and served in the United States Airforce, where he obtained the rank of First Lieutenant. While in the Airforce Vic and Jane lived in Cheyenne, WY and Tampa, FL. After his military service, Jane and Vic moved to Guatemala and Honduras, where Vic worked for the United Fruit Company. As his family began to grow, Vic and Jane moved to Ferriday, LA, where he began his business career. Initially starting with a small service station in Vidalia, LA, Vic’s incredible work ethic and business savvy allowed him, at a young age, to own Delta Truck and Tractor, and he was one of only five Master XL International Harvester dealers in the country. Vic also started Delta Fuel Company. Vic was a President of the Deep South Farm Equipment Dealers, Past-President of the Concordia Cattleman’s Association, one of the original members of the board of directors of Louisiana Central Bank (currently Delta Bank), and a past member of the board of directors of Louisiana Farm Bureau.

Vic was raised hunting and fishing in the lakes and bayous of south Louisiana. He went on numerous trips hunting all over the world. He even killed a cape buffalo in Africa. His love of the outdoors stayed with him his entire life and, until recently, was still squirrel hunting with his dogs and grandchildren.

Vic and Jane traveled the world, and had been to 49 countries. Many of the trips were “Birding” trips with National Geographic. However, his favorite trips were with his entire family, all five children, their spouses and all 12 grandchildren.

Vic will most be remembered as “Dad” or “Grandad.’’ Of his accomplishments, Vic was most proud of his family.

Vic is survived by his wife, Jane; five children, Pete Vegas (Jean), Clint Vegas (Suzanne), Brad Vegas (Nancy), Donna Callaway (Bryan), and Kay Batte (Greg); twelve grandchildren, Matt Vegas, Brett Vegas, Scott Vegas, Andrew Vegas, Adam Vegas, Mitchell Vegas, Jake Vegas, Caroline Vegas, Josh Callaway, Wesley Callaway Riley, Braxton Batte, and Emily Batte Prince; nine great-grandchildren, two sisters, Jewell Ott and Olga Vegas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10,2024, at 10 a.m. at the Ferriday Methodist Church in Ferriday under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Vic’s grandsons will be the pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions to Vic’s memory be donated to Concordia PAWS Rescue Shelter, one of Vic’s favorite causes.
