BROOKHAVEN — With three runs in the first inning of the opening game in the MAIS 5A baseball playoffs, the Cathedral Green Wave looked ready to put their post-season hopes into high gear.
Unfortunately, 13 hits from the Brookhaven Academy Cougars in five innings slammed the breaks on any early aspirations, beating the Green Wave 13-3 Tuesday night in Brookhaven.
After scoring three runs in the top of the first, the Green Wave did not cross the plate for the remainder of the game.
In addition to 13 hits, Brookhaven accumulated six walks in the game. Cathedral had four hits and committed two errors.
Brookhaven’s Caleb Authement earned the win for the Cougars, pitching five innings, striking out two batters, drawing four walks and giving up five hits.
Cathedral’s Owen Jordan took the loss for the Green Wave, pitching three and two-thirds innings, allowing nine runs (six earned) on seven hits, striking out six and walking three.
Cathedral and Brookhaven Academy meet in Natchez for a 4:30 p.m. game at Chester Willis Field in the second game of the best-of-three series. If the Green Wave beat the Cougars in the first game, a second game will follow at 6:30 p.m. to decide which team will advance to the second round of the playoffs.
