GALLMAN — Levi Beesley came through in the clutch for Adams County Christian School’s varsity baseball team as his triple drove in three runs in the top of the fifth inning as the Rebels held on for a 10-9 win over the Copiah Academy Colonels in Game 2 of an MAIS District 4-5A varsity doubleheader last Friday afternoon.

The win by ACCS in the nightcap kept the Rebels from being swept by Copiah Academy in the three-game series last week. It also kept ACCS’s slim playoff hopes alive as it will likely need to sweep district newcomer Providence Classical Academy this week to make the postseason.

“Big win for our club moving forward. Probably our best team game we’ve played all year with guys stepping up, in big moments, and doing what was necessary for our team to win,” Rebels head coach Jake Winston said.

Colton Rabb was the winning pitcher for ACCS and Coleman Carter earned the save. Winston said that the pitching staff did an outstanding job of limiting the number of walks issued to Copiah Academy hitters in Game 2 “which we’ve been working on for weeks, so I’m glad our guys were able to see improvements in our craft.”

Beesely ended up going 2-for-3 with his big three-RBI triple that turned what Winston said was a back-and-forth game back in favor of ACCS. He wasn’t the only Rebel who had a big game. Tyson Young hit a three-run home run for visiting team to stun the home-team crowd that was preparing for the Colonels to sweep the Rebels.

“Levin with a huge three-RBI triple in the fifth inning really lit a spark for us (Friday) night and ended up being the difference in the game,” Winston said. “He’s been seeing the ball well lately and it came up clutch for our team.”

Young went 1-for-2 while Carter had a double, Caden Aplin was 1-for-2 with a double, and Chris Sewell had a single.

“A lot of guys did some great things (Friday) night. I thought we ran the bases really well in Game 2 of the doubleheader and kept pressure on. It’s what we have to do to be successful offensively. Great team win all the way around,” Winston said.

ACCS (3-16, 2-7) traveled to Bossier City to take on Providence Classical Academy for a varsity-only District 4-5A match-up at 4 p.m. Tuesday — if the weather permitted.

In Game 1 of the varsity doubleheader, ACCS had 12 total base hits, but it was not enough as Copiah Academy defeated the Rebels 12-8.

Trey Wood was the winning pitcher for the Colonels. Tyson Young was charged with the loss on the mound for the Rebels after he allowed 12 runs, nine of them earned, with five walks, two strikeouts, and one hit batter in four and two-thirds innings. Coleman Carter came on in relief and struck out three batters in one and two-thirds innings.

Young had a better performance at the plate than he did on the mound as he went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Sean Kerry Cothern was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run while Carter was 2-for-3.

“Tough loss. Both teams traded blows back and forth for seven innings. They just came out on top,” Winston said. “If we limit our walks and base-running mistakes, we give ourselves a chance to win. Proud of our team for fighting and grinding out seven innings.”
