NATCHEZ – Peggy Jean Sandel, 88, of Natchez, MS, passed away on March 29, 2024.

Born in Blytheville, AR to John Everett Franklin Elledge and Frances Louise Langley on March 5, 1936. 

Peggy was an amazing matriarch, raising her four kids with passion and grace.  She was immensely proficient at playing bridge with her many friends.  She was also a member of the Pilgrimage Garden Club of Natchez. While there, she was a docent for many different houses during both the Spring and Fall Pilgrimage and educated and entertained all of the visitors she met.  She and Walter were also dedicated and loyal members of St. Mary’s Basilica in Natchez.

Peggy will be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness, and quick wit by all who knew and loved her.

Peggy and Walter lived in many places across the country before settling in Natchez over thirty years ago. 

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter Legette Sandel, and her children, Lisa Louise Sandel and Walter Legette Sandel, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter and son, Ruth Michelle (Mimi) Murphy and husband, Brian Murphy of Davie, FL, parents to Halie and Michael Murphy; and Keith Sandel and wife, Amalia Sandel of Austin, TX, parents to Adelaide and Cincinnati Sandel.  

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024, at St. Mary Basilica in Natchez, with Father Aaron Williams officiating.

Visitation will be held preceding the service from 10 until 11 a.m., also at St. Mary Basilica.

Burial will follow the funeral service at Natchez City Cemetery, under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Smith, Freddie Sandel, Michael Murphy, Kaiser Harriss, Cincinnati Sandel, and Mark Braverman.
