FERRIDAY — Tyrin Singleton led four Delta Charter School players in double figures with 13 points as the Storm finally picked up its first win of the season by holding on for a 60-57 win over the Oak Grove High School Tigers last Tuesday night.

Not only was it win number one for Delta Charter’s varsity boys’ basketball team this season, but also for first-year head coach Patrick Davis, who is leading both the Storm and Lady Storm after Ronald Ellis left DCS last summer to become an assistant coach at Natchez High School.

“It’s almost like taking a bear off your back,” Davis said. “We have a lot of guards, so we changed our tempo to up-tempo. We did a lot of trapping and full-court defense. We’re starting to get our legs under us because all of (our players) played football.”

Tyron Edwards and Jayden Griffin each finished with 12 points while Juvari Singleton chipped in with 10 points for the Storm, who jumped out to a 19-14 lead over the Tigers after one quarter of play and then took a 29-24 lead into halftime.

Delta Charter then outscored Oak Grove 14-10 in the third quarter for a 43-34 lead. And that turned out to be a good thing because the Tigers scored 23 points in the fourth quarter while the Storm put up 17 points to stave off the visiting team’s rally.

“If there was one team that we could match up with, it would be Oak Grove. It also helps that they just won state in football,” Davis said. “I don’t know how good of shape they’re in. I’m looking for us to make a run in district with our players.”

Delta Charter (1-5) travels to Farmerville, La. to take on Union Parish High School at 6 p.m. Friday.

Oak Grove girls 42, Delta Charter 20 (Tues. night)

FERRIDAY — Delta Charter School’s varsity girls’ basketball team remained winless on the season after the Lady Storm fell to the Oak Grove High School Lady Tigers 42-20 last Tuesday night, but head coach Patrick Davis remains optimistic about his very young team.

“I’ve got six eighth-graders, one seventh-grader, and two freshmen. No seniors. No juniors. No sophomores. Most of them are my middle school team,” Davis said. “We’re really young. We’re getting better.”

Yet only three players scored for the Lady Storm. Camryn Tassin led them with nine points while Jillian Kemp had six points and Janiyah Singleton poured in five points. Ellie Ray led Oak Grove with a game-high 15 points and Caroline Bradley finished with eight points.

The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Storm 10-6 in both the first and second quarters for a 20-12 halftime lead. Delta Charter’s youth and inexperience showed in the third quarter as it was outscored by Oak Grove 10-2 to go down 30-14.

“They competed. Oak Grove actually came in with a highly-ranked sophomore (Ray). We worked real hard, but the experience really showed up on the Oak Grove side,” Davis said.

The Lady Storm fell to 0-6 overall and they next play at Union Parish High School in Farmerville, La. on Friday with tip-off at 5 p.m.
