NATCHEZ — Every year, a Natchez church relives a holy night that took place over 2,000 years ago in the city of Bethleham.
Members of the Jefferson Street Methodist Church have put on a live nativity every year for over 30 years, through rain sleet or snow. This live nativity in previous years has taken place all weekend long, but this year the nativity is scheduled to have live actors for one night only, church members said.
The nativity returns on Sunday, Dec. 17, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for anyone who cares to drive or stop by and see it.
Local youth portray the roles of Mary and Joseph, angels, wise men and shepherds and farm animals portray the, well, farm animals in the stable that Jesus was born in.
Until then wooden cutout figures, also made by church members, hold their place in front of the church.
On Monday morning, church volunteers Charlie Thomas, Jim Crawford, Joe Hartley, Bobby Hall and Jerry Smith worked together to build the stable to hold the nativity scene.
