NATCHEZ — On Monday, the Duncan Park golf course will host its annual Norman Puckett Junior Championship tournament.
Duncan Park Golf Superintendent Greg Brooking said food and equipment will be provided for all youth, and he encouraged people to get the word out to young golfers about the tournament.
“First we had four free clinics here (for young golfers), and the culmination of that is this tournament,” Brooking said.
“We want to get the word out to all the junior golfers out there. Our campers already know about it, but you don’t have to have participated in the camp to play in it.”
Brooking said although the tournament has been happening off and on for the past 20 years, interest in it has picked back up among young golfers recently.
“It kind of went away for a while, because we had no funding and there was a lack of interest on the part of the kids,” Brooking said.
“Interest has been picking back up, and the kids really want the trophy. Parents are welcome to come, because we need help in supervising, but the tournament is for children only.”
In addition, Brooking said hosting the tournament is a good way to draw attention to the facilities at Duncan Park.
“It lets them know there’s a recreation facility here to be used, and it’s something good for them to do: get out and play golf. There will be good competition out there, but in the end, everyone’s a winner,” Brooking said.
The tournament will be at 9 a.m. Monday. For more information, call Brooking at 601-248-4913.
