Franklin County 12-year-old team eliminated from sub-district tourney

BUDE — Leroy “Cowboy” Jones Ballpark was the sight of a thriller Monday night, as Walthall County outlasted Franklin 9-8 in 8 innings of the Dixie Youth Major League Sub-district tournament to advance to the finals. Franklin County (1-2) was eliminated from the tournament.
Franklin County, coming off a 13-5 loss to Summit Saturday night, took a commanding 6-2 lead against Walthall County Monday night off a momentum turning grand slam from catcher Connor Quin in the third inning. The blast was one of three big hits Quin provided for the Franklin County All-Stars.
In the fifth frame, Walthall County exploded for three runs to take an 8-6 lead. Franklin County couldn’t solve Walthall County pitcher Peyton Harvey’s curve ball until Javy Watts provided some last second heroics with a clutch bottom of the sixth two run dinger that hit the ballpark light lines on its way out of the stadium. The hit forced extra innings.
After a scoreless seventh, Walthall County got on board in the top half of the eighth off a fielders choice from Blaine Bossier that scored leadoff batter Luke Phillips from third.
Harvey kept Franklin County off balance in the bottom half of the eighth to savor the victory with two strikeouts. He retired the last batter he faced with a table dropping curve ball.
Through four innings of work, Harvey struck out seven batters and walked one to capture the win.
Absorbing the loss for Franklin County was Bernard Selmon, who went three innings in relief striking out two and walking one.
At the plate, Quin led all batters with a Grandslam and two doubles for 5 RBIs. Javy Watts had a home run and a single, while Zayne Mullins plated two singles.
For Walthall County, Luke Phillips had a home run and a single. Harvey added two doubles.
