NATCHEZ — It hasn’t rained for weeks in the Miss-Lou, but on the way to Game 1 of the 10-year-olds district tournament series between McComb and Natchez — it rained. And rained. And rained.
The best-of-three series is used to determine which team will be seeded first and second from District 6 for the South State Tournament.
The last time the Natchez 10-year-old All-Star team played a game was last Thursday night in the finals of the District 6 North Sub-district Tournament.
However, after more than 3 inches fell in Natchez during the day, tournament director Porky Smith had no choice but to postpone the game until 7 p.m. today. Game 2, which will take place in McComb, will now be played at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Smith made the decision at about 1:45 p.m. Monday after checking the conditions of the field. The field at the ballpark was deemed unplayable due to all the rain.
It will have been five days since Natchez last hit the field for a game. But Coach Gary Farmer isn’t worried about the delay.
“I think they need(ed) a break. They’ll be ready (today),” Farmer said. “It’s a tough team. They had a long series getting out of the loser’s bracket. Physically, they needed a break.”
The Natchez 10-year-old All-Stars practiced Sunday night and Farmer noted that the team will be ready not only physically, but also mentally. He said despite the rain the field will be ready for tonight’s series opener.
“It’s pretty wet right now,” Farmer said Monday afternoon. “But it needed the water. Everybody needed the water. The super grounds crew, led by Billy Calcote, has done a super job. They’ll probably be out here (Monday) evening putting out some high-dry and getting it ready for (today).”
Monday was just the third day in which measurable rain fell in Natchez in the last five weeks.
The Natchez 11-year-old All-Stars will also have to wait until today to continue its best-of-three District 6 Tournament series on the road against McComb. Game 2 will be at 6 p.m. and Game 3, if necessary, will take place after Game 2. McComb won took a 1-0 lead in the series with a 4-1 win last Friday night at Carroll-Jones Field.
Also, the Concordia Parish 9- and 11-year-old All-Star teams participating in district tournaments in Monroe, La., and the Concordia Parish 12-year-old All-Star playing in a district tournament in Winnsboro, La., had their games rained out.
The Concordia 11-year-old All-Star team, the No. 2 seed and coached by Whest Shirley, will take on Caldwell Parish, the No. 5 seed, at 6 p.m. at Forsythe Park in Monroe. Shirley said that the other two All-Star teams will resume at the same time tonight that they were schedule to play on Monday.
