LORMAN — Not many people can say they have worked out with an NFL Hall of Famer, but Alcorn State cornerback Roderick Williams is one of the lucky few.

Williams recently was invited to a camp to run drills under retired NFL great Deion Sanders.

Williams said during the week of June 15 at Frisco, Texas, they ran cone drills, worked out in the sandpit and more.

“It was a solid workout,” he said. “I learned things I need to do to improve my game, and things I need to take out to make my game better.”

The most important detail he took from the camp is that you have to play hard to win, Williams said.

“Deion is a great guy, a real competitor,” he said. “He has a competitive attitude that I’m gonna start bringing to the field.”

Williams said only the elite cornerbacks were invited to Sanders’ camp.

“A lot of the corners there are the guys projected to get drafted this year,” he said.

Williams said attending Sanders’ camp was a great experience that will help his career, and is looking forward to this season at ASU.

“I feel like it is going to be a big season for our team,” he said. “We start off playing Southern Miss and this will give us a chance to be seen by the NFL.

“We didn’t have a good year last year,” he said. “But we’ve been working hard in the off-season, and I think it is going to pay off.”

While he thinks Deion is great, Williams said former Washington Redskins great Darrell Green is the man after whom he is modeling his career.

“Darrell is my main guy,” Williams said. “I really look up to him and have stayed in contact with him for career advice.”

Williams is majoring in recreation and will be graduating in December. As far as his season, Williams said he has a lot for which to look forward.

“I picture having a breakout season and getting picked to play in one of the bowls,” he said. “And hopefully I’ll hear my name called in the NFL draft.”
