Natchez residents gathered at the corner of High Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Streets Thursday night for a candlelight vigil honoring George Floyd and other victims of violence. Local residents lit candles in the name of loved ones who have fallen victim of violence, including recent some of the recent shooting deaths that have plagued the city in recent years.
The candlelight vigil was part of a series of peaceful protests and demonstrations organized to give local residents an opportunity to express their feelings about the events surrounding the Floyd who was killed last week in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a police officer put his knee on Floyd’s neck and the incident was videotaped and it went viral sparking protests throughout the nation.
On Wednesday, a group of protesters marched down Martin Luther King Jr. Street from George F. West Boulevard to High Street holding signs and making chants. A similar march is planned for Saturday morning starting at 9 a.m.
