MONTEREY — The Monterey High School Wolves took on a familiar opponent in the bi-district round of the 2020 LHSAA Class B Playoffs last Friday night in District 6-B rival Oak Hill High School.

Even though Monterey entered the playoffs as the No. 7 seed and Oak Hill was the No. 26 seed, the Wolves were not able to put the Rams away until the fourth quarter in a 61-45 win at the Harrisonburg High School Gym.

Three-point shooting was one factor in the outcome of this game. Monterey made nine of 25 from long distance while Oak Hill was just three for 19. Rebounding was another key as the Wolves pulled down 15 offensive rebounds and 27 total for the game while the Rams had 18 total rebounds.

Monterey took a 14-9 lead over Oak Hill at the end of the first quarter, but the Rams outscored the Wolves 11-9 in the second quarter to go into halftime down just three points, 23-20. The third quarter went back and forth with both teams scoring 14 points to make it a 37-34 game in favor of the home team.

Then the Wolves took control in the fourth quarter on the offensive end as they put up 24 points. The Rams, on the other hand, could not keep up and scored just 11 points.

Trey Boyd led Monterey with 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Tyson Young finished with 13 points with two 3-pointers and 5-of-6 from the line to go with eight rebounds. Phillip Atkins, who had nine points, and Ethan Clark, who had eight points mainly due to foul trouble, each made two 3-pointers.

Robert Cooper led Oak Hill with a game-high 22 points and Cody Leach added 12 points.

Monterey (26-5) will be on the road today in the Class B regional round when they travel to Logansport, La. to take on No. 23 seed Stanley High School at 6 p.m. The Panthers upset No. 10 seed Singer High School 56-45 last Friday night.

West St. John 64, Delta Charter 57 (Friday)

EDGARD, La. — Delta Charter School couldn’t get enough shots to fall in the first half and that proved to be costly as the 21st-seeded Storm lost to the 12th-seeded West St. John High School Rams 64-57 last Friday night in the bi-district round of the 2020 LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.

Delta Charter tried its best to stay with West St. John in the first half, but the Storm trailed 16-12 after one quarter for play before the Rams outscored them 16-10 in the second quarter for a 32-22 halftime lead.

The Storm did its best to get back in the game coming out of the half and outscored the Rams 16-13 in the third quarter to make it a 45-38 game. Even though Delta Charter scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, it didn’t make nearly enough stops as West St. John (13-18) also put up 19 points.

Kavarius Whitehead led Delta Charter with 20 points while Ny’kel Brooks had 19 points and Trace Miller finished with 14 points. It was the final game for Whitehead and Brooks, who are both seniors.

The Storm finished its season with an overall record of 6-16.

Block 71, Centerville 51 (Friday)

CENTERVILLE, La. — After getting off to a slow start, the 18th-seeded Block High School Bears got into a good offensive rhythm in the second and third quarters as they upset the 15th-seeded Centerville High School Bulldogs 71-51 last Friday night in the bi-district round of the 2020 LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.

Block found itself trailing Centerville 13-9 after one quarter of play before going on a tear over the next two quarters. The defense also picked up its pressure and that allowed the Bears to outscore the Bulldogs 16-6 in the second quarter and 25-11 in the third quarter for a 50-30 lead.

Dexter Jefferson led the Bears with a game-high 27 points and Zavion Green added 14 points. Tylik Davis contributed with 12 points and Chad Green chipped in with 10 points. Trevyn Guilbeau led the Bulldogs with 25 points and Drevyn Guilbeau had 15 points.

Block (13-10) will be on the road in the regional round when it plays at No. 2 seed Grand Lake High School.

White Castle 73, Sicily Island 38 (Friday)

WHITE CASTLE — The 25th-seeded Sicily Island High School Tigers saw their season come to an end last Friday night in a 73-38 loss to the eighth-seeded White Castle High School Bulldogs in the bi-district round of the 2020 LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.

Sicily Island finished with an overall record of 4-22.
