FERRIDAY — Ferriday High Lady Trojans won 55-50 over the Jonesboro-Hodge Lady Tigers to advance to the Quarterfinal round of the LHSAA Class 2A playoffs on Monday.

Lisa Abron, Ferriday High Lady Trojans head coach, said senior Shakeyla McCray came up huge off of the bench for the Lady Trojans.

“McCray played some really good defense and she was a catalyst in scoring,” Abron said.

McCray shot three 3-pointers, which kept the Lady Trojans in the game in the first half. The Lady Trojans were down 32-27 at halftime.

At halftime, Abron said she wanted the Lady Trojans to stop the Lady Tigers’ big girls, but the plan changed.

“At halftime, we put some pressure on their guard [Xabrianna Jackson],” Abron said. “She couldn’t get passes off of anyone. It threw them off and that was the difference maker.”

In the first half, Jackson scored 16 points for the Lady Tigers. Due to the Lady Trojans pressure, Jackson scored seven points. Jackson finished the game with 23 points.

The No. 7 seed Lady Trojans advance to the Quarterfinal round at 6 p.m. Thursday and will travel to No. 2 seed Red River High School.

Monterey High girls lose in Regional round of Class B

MIDLAND — Monterey High Lady Wolves came into the playoffs hoping to get past the Regional round. But all hopes came to an end as the Midland High School Lady Rebels won 71-43 over the Lady Wolves.

It was hard for the Lady Wolves from the start. The Lady Rebels went on a six to eight point run to begin the game. By the end of the first half, the Lady Rebels led 31-28.

The Lady Rebels shot three 3-pointers in three positions to begin the second half.
“We were having to play catch-up and we could never catch them from that point,” said Cary Shivley, Monterey girls basketball head coach.

The Lady Wolves end their season with a 22-6 record and Class B-District 6 champions.

“I’m just proud of our girls and the work ethic they showed and how hard they tried in every game we played this year,” Shivley said. “I thought it was a good effort of the team all year long.”
