Wilkinson County Christian Academy advance to semifinals

WOODVILLE — In front of their home fans, the No. 1 seed Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams pulled off a 49-30 victory over the Tallulah Academy Lady Trojans on Wednesday night.
Mike McGraw, Lady Rams girls basketball head coach, said he was proud of the Lady Rams efforts.
“They always scratch and claw their way to victory,” McGraw said. “They’re a hustling team and we played very well last night.”
In the first quarter, WCCA got out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter. Then, the Lady Trojans defense showed up in the second quarter. Tallulah Academy only allowed the Lady Rams to score five points in the second quarter.
After halftime, WCCA came out and broke the game wide open with 18 points in the third quarter and held Tallulah Academy to six points.
Three WCCA players scored in double digits for the Lady Rams. Gracie Cavin led the Lady Rams with 12 points, followed by Cheylin Bolden with 11 points and Lexi Freeman scored 10 points. Anna Charlotte Redhead and Alexis June each tied with six points.
“They’re not selfish and they don’t mind sharing the ball,” McGraw said. “That’s why we end up with so many girls in double digits.”
Meanwhile, Faith Kivett led Tallulah Academy with 12 points, followed closely behind Ginny Hargrave with eight points and Sara Kennedy and Maddie Collins each scored three points.
The Lady Rams moved onto the semifinal round of the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools Class 1A South region to face the No. 2 seed Tensas Academy Lady Chiefs. Tensas Academy won 48-14 over Mt. Salus on Tuesday in the first round.
Tip off is at 4 p.m. today at WCCA for the semifinal round of the girls basketball MAIS Class 1A South Region.
WCCA boys 64, Central School 59
WOODVILLE — After watching the Lady Rams win their game, the No. 1 seed Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams won 64-59 over the Central School Wildcats on Wednesday night.
The game was close throughout with WCCA winning three of the four quarters by less than six points.
The Rams started the game off with 13 points in the first quarter and 16 points in the second quarter. The Wildcats scored 10 points in the first quarter and 14 points in the second quarter.
Wilkinson County broke the game wide open with 21 points in the third quarter while Central scored 15 points. The Wildcats tried to storm a comeback with 20 points scored in the fourth quarter but could not catch the Rams.
Roderick Bailey led WCCA with 24 points followed by R.J. Fisher with 14 points and Andrew Sessions finished third with 12 points.
For Central, Bobby Ballard led the Wildcats with 14 points, Trevor Martin scored 12 points and Clayton Maynard rounded out the top three players with 10 points.
WCCA will play against No. 2 Tensas Academy in the semifinal round of the boys basketball MAIS Class 2A. Tensas Academy earned a 59-20 victory over Prentiss Christian on Tuesday night.
