MONTEREY — The Monterey High School Wolves are looking for continued success in the four remaining games of the season.

The Wolves are in first place in the Louisiana High School Athletics Association District 6-B in the five-team standings. Eric Richard, head boys’ basketball coach, said there is room to improve for the rest of the season.

Richard said Monterey has picked up some key wins up to this point in the season. A key win earlier in the season was against the Grant High School Cougars, a Class 3A school, on Nov. 18. Monterey won 48-46.

Another key win was against the Cathedral High School Green Wave on Jan. 16. Monterey defeated Cathedral, 48-45.

After defeating the Green Wave on Jan. 16, the Wolves hosted the Georgetown High School Bulldogs on Jan. 19. Monterey won 39-32. In the game, Trey Boyd led the Wolves with 15 points and was two for two behind the arc. Connor Boyd and Daylen Gray both scored eight points. Richard said Boyd has been averaging 16 points a game.

In the four remaining games of the season, Monterey (15-4, 1-0 District 6-B) will play seven District 6 games. Monterey will play against Oak Hill, Glenmora and Grace Christian twice and play against University Academy once. Richard said in past seasons the Wolves have had success against district opponents.

“We have two district games this week,” Richard said. “We will have a better understanding in the district after this week.”

After Tuesday’s district game against Glenmora High School, Monterey will host Grace Christian School (7-13, 0-1) at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

“I think we have put ourselves in position to get a home playoff game and try to make some noise in the playoffs,” Richard said. “This is the home stretch of the season and this is where we need to play our best brand of basketball. I really don’t think we have played our best brand of basketball. Hopefully we can do that in the next seven games.”
