NATCHEZ — Several Natchez LSU fans plan to travel to New Orleans for the College Football National Championship game between the No. 1 LSU Tigers and No. 3 Clemson Tigers at 7 p.m. Monday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Among those fans will be Russ Wood, Hayden Kaiser III, Sue Loy and her husband Barry Loy.
“I have never been to a national championship game before, so I’m super excited,” Kaiser said. “I’m excited about the atmosphere, and I have been to a ton of Saints games at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. I expect it to be fun and a big time win for LSU.”
Both Wood and Kaiser are season-ticket holders for home games at LSU. Wood and his father David Wood have been season ticket holders for 30 years. Meanwhile, Kaiser has had season tickets since 1954.
“My dad was a good friend with Bob Pettit,” Kaiser said. “Pettit is one of the greatest basketball players ever to come out of LSU. He and my dad were good friends at LSU. Bob set him up with these tickets 66 years ago, and we have been sitting in the same seats ever since.”
Sue Loy said she and her husband have been to the 2003 and 2007 national championship games.
“We have been to all of the national championship games the Tigers have played in (since 2000),” Sue Loy said. “It happened all to be in New Orleans, which was very cool. We go to the SEC Championship game every year. It’s always exciting when LSU is playing in the SEC Championship game.”
Wood was also at the 2003 BCS National Championship game where the LSU Tigers won 21-14 over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Sue Loy said she and her husband are excited to go down to New Orleans for the national championship game.
“We’re getting our purple and gold ready to go, and we’re not wearing anything but purple and gold,” Sue Loy said. “We’re going to be decked out and it’s going to be fun.”
