Stepping up to history: Adams County elected officials sworn in

Adams County made history Thursday morning by swearing in Shameca Collins as the first African American District Attorney for the Sixth Judicial District in Mississippi. Collins’ son Colin Brown, 5, stood on a step ladder to hold the Bible for his mother’s ceremony. Collins was sworn in by Judge Deborah McDonald from the Mississippi Court of Appeals. Other officials making history as the first African Americans in their respective offices include Tax Collector Rose Daniel Patterson, Chancery Clerk Eva Givens, Tax Assessor Larry Hughes and County Attorney Carmen Brooks Drake. Other newly-elected officials sworn in Thursday were District 1 Supervisor Wes Middleton, District 2 Supervisor Kevin Wilson, District 5 Supervisor Warren Gaines, County Surveyor Robert Greene and Justice Court Judge of the Northern District Audrey Minor.  For more pictures from Thursday’s swearing-in ceremony go to natchezdemocrat.com.
