NATCHEZ — Natchez Church of God is bringing in a special musical guest to accompany the choir for a Christmas music program titled “Magnify: A Soulful Christmas Celebration” at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church at 98 McNeely Road.
Special guest Mitchel Jon is a contemporary Christian musician based in Nashville, Tennessee, said Angela Monehan, wife of the church’s pastor Brian Monehan.
“It is a soulful Christmas celebration,” Angela said. “His music is a mixture of contemporary and Southern flare and sometimes some blues stuff and ’50s rock vocals.”
Angela said the church presents a special Christmas music program every year but this is the first year the event will feature a guest musician.
Angela said she and her husband Brian knew Jon from their previous careers in music before coming to the church.
Jon used to be a secular musician and transitioned to Christian music after he was saved several years ago, she said.
Jon will perform Christmas tunes with the Church of God choir and the church’s “Kids Kingdom” will perform 10 selections, Angela said.
“He will be featured on five of the songs,” Angela said. “This will be the first time we’ve ever added a guest vocalist.”
The event is free and open to the public, Angela said.
The following Sunday, Dec. 22, during the 10 a.m. regular church service, the Church of God will present another special musical guest Gordon Mote.
“He is a Southern country gospel performer,” Angela said. “He is a phenomenal musician arranger, producer and pianist. Also, he is blind.”
Mote’s performance is also free and open to the public, Angela said.
“You don’t’ want to miss these two special events coming to the Natchez Church of God,” Angela said.
