BROOKHAVEN — Adams County Christian School’s varsity basketball teams took on some tough competition last Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon at the Brookhaven Academy Tournament.

Unfortunately, both the Rebels and Lady Rebels came out on the losing end of their games both days and now currently sit at 0-3 overall.

On Monday, the ACCS Rebels had an opportunity to notch their first win of the season as they led Bowling Green School after three quarters. However, the Buccaneers rallied in the fourth quarter to escape with a 54-51 win.

Bowling Green jumped out to a 15-11 lead after one quarter of play, but ACCS responded by outscoring the Buccaneers 18-11 in the second quarter to give the Rebels a 29-26 halftime lead. The Buccaneers cut one point into that lead by the end of the third quarter and then needed a 17-12 advantage in the fourth quarter to defeat the Rebels.

ACCS was led by JD Granger and Vic Lassiter with nine points each while Josh Credit added eight points.

The ACCS Lady Rebels were held to single-digit scoring in all four quarters of a 53-23 loss to the Parklane Academy Lady Pioneers later that afternoon. Parklane dominated the first quarter en route to an 18-2 lead and never looked back.

Geri Brumfield led the Lady Rebels with 12 points and Halle Peterman finished with six points.

Then on Tuesday, ACCS went up against both of Jackson Academy’s varsity teams and the outcomes were not pretty at all.

The Lady Rebels lost to the Lady Raiders 52-11 and the Rebels fell to the Raiders 64-41. In the girls’ game, Brumfield led ACCS with four points while Peterman and Heidi Zimmerman had three points apiece.

“We played two very well-coached teams. I saw some positives that my girls can take from that,” Lady Rebels head coach Melanie Hall said. “We’re going to continue to work and get better and be ready. Playing (teams) like that only helps you (where) you need to get to and you need to be working for.”

Hall added, “They battled and they never quit, regardless what the scoreboard says. They never quit and never put their heads down. They encouraged each other.”

In the boys’ game, Lassiter led the Rebels with 13 points while Credit, Granger, and Wes Stockstill each had seven points.

Rebels first-year head coach Matthew Freeman said he was pleased with the team’s effort over the two days, but the execution was lacking.

“We shot 13 for 34 from the free-throw line and seven for 35 from the three-point line. Obviously right now we’re not shooting the ball well because it’s early in the season and we’re just getting going,” Freeman said.

As for Lassiter’s performance against some good competition, Freeman said, “He’s a basketball-only guy, so he’s in midseason shape right now and everybody else isn’t.”

About the tournament itself, Freeman said, “It was good competition and good for us to set that level of basketball early on. So where we stand right now and what we need to work on. It was just two games and not an actual tournament.”

ACCS will have a few more days of practice this week before hosting Wilkinson County Christian Academy on Thursday, Dec. 5. The varsity girls’ game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boys’ game at 7:30 p.m.

“The more we practice, the more shots they get in. The more shots we get in early, the hotter we will be in the season,” Freeman said.

Cathedral varsity teams split with Tensas Academy (Monday)

NATCHEZ — The Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave used a big third quarter to defeat the Tensas Academy Lady Chiefs 54-29 last Monday night, but the Green Wave was unable to keep the momentum going as it lost to the Chiefs 41-38 in the nightcap.

In the varsity girls’ game, Cathedral’s defense held Tensas Academy in check, but the offense stalled a bit in the second quarter as the Lady Green Wave (6-2) took a 22-12 lead into halftime. The third quarter was a completely different story as the hosts outscored the visitors 24-9 for a commanding 46-21 lead.

Cate Drane finished with a game-high 23 points and Ryleigh Probst chipped in with 10 points to lead the Lady Green Wave. The Lady Chiefs were led by Annabelle Paxton with 14 points.

The Green Wave fell to 2-4 overall.

Cathedral travels to Jackson on Monday, Dec. 2 to take on Jackson Academy for a four-game set. The varsity girls’ game gets under way at 6 p.m. and the varsity boys’ game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
