The Natchez-Adams School District recently entered into a partnership with the non-profit group Film Natchez.

Under the agreement, students at the Fallin Career and Technology Center have a chance to meet filmmakers face-to-face and get real-world experience in the film industry.

The first field trip for Fallin students enrolled in digital media and carpentry programs was last Saturday when the students attended a film seminar at a film studio in downtown Natchez owned by local film producers Tate Taylor and John Norris. On that trip, the students got to meet screenwriter and novelist David Bush, who is best known for his work on “The Hunt,” “Ma” and “Jeepers Creepers III.”

Such an opportunity is invaluable for young students and could help set their career path options early. Much has been made in recent months about the lack of vocational education training in the nation’s public school systems and here in Adams County.

We applaud the partnership between the Fallin Career and Technology Center and Film Natchez.

The film industry is set to produce several productions in Natchez in the next year alone due to a film-incentives package passed earlier this year in the state Legislature that is among the most competitive in the nation. With Taylor’s and Norris’ Crooked Letter Studios based in Natchez, the area is primed to capitalize on the market.

Such a partnership as the school district and Film Natchez have established could be beneficial for both the students and the film industry and will only serve to support the burgeoning film industry in Natchez.

That is what vocational education is all about, training young people to fill real-world jobs.
