CENTREVILLE — Led by Jeff Corrol and Ben Garrett, the Centreville Academy Tigers used a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Cathedral High School Green Wave 56-51 Tuesday night.
Corrol led all scorers with 21 points and Garrett finished with 14 points. Those two were part of a fourth quarter in which Centreville outscored Cathedral 22-11 to come back from what at halftime was a seven-point deficit and a six-point deficit after three quarters of play.
Cathedral, looking for its first win of the season, controlled the pace of the game in the first half. The Green Wave led the Tigers 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and 27-20 at the half. Centreville started to chip away at that lead in the third quarter and outscored Cathedral 14-13 to make it a 40-34 game.
JT Taylor led the Green Wave with 16 points while Chase Kaiser had nine points and Noah Russ added eight points.
Cathedral (0-3) plays host to Wilkinson County Christian Academy today at 7:30 p.m. Centreville Academy (2-1) doesn’t play again until Monday, Dec. 2 when it hosts Silliman Institute.
WCCA boys 58, ACCS 55
WOODVILLE — The season opener for the Adams County Christian School Rebels did not quite turn out the way they wanted it to as they lost to the Wilkinson County Christian School Rams 58-55 Tuesday night.
The first quarter was the key to WCCA’s win. Playing its fourth game of the season, the Rams took advantage of that situation in jumping out to an 18-11 lead. ACCS tried to mount a comeback over the next two quarters. The Rebels outscored the Rams 18-17 in the second quarter and 9-5 in a lackluster third quarter to be down just two points, 40-38.
However, WCCA regained its momentum and its shooting touch on its way to outscoring ACCS 18-17 in the fourth quarter to escape with the three-point win. R.J. Fisher led the Rams with a game-high 22 points while Roderick Bailey had 13 points and Andrew Sessions poured in 12 points. The Rebels were led by Vic Lassiter with 19 points and Josh Credit with 15 points.
ACCS (0-1) next plays at the Brookhaven Academy Tournament next Monday and Tuesday. ACCS’s varsity boys, varsity girls, and junior varsity girls basketball teams were scheduled to play at Riverfield Academy today, but the Raiders’ football team will be taking on Tri-County Academy in the MAIS Class 4A state championship game tonight at Jackson Academy, thereby forcing the cancellation of the basketball games.
WCCA (4-0) travels to Natchez to take on Cathedral High School today at 7:30 p.m.
Centreville Academy girls 60, Cathedral 31
CENTREVILLE — Savannah Hailey led Centreville Academy with a game-high 23 points and Lacy Darden added 14 points as the Lady Tigers rolled to a 60-31 win over the Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave Tuesday night.
Not one player for Cathedral scored in double figures. Lauren Dunbar led the Lady Green Wave with nine points and Hailey Ellis ended up with seven points.
Cathedral (3-2) hosts Wilkinson County Christian Academy today at 6 p.m. Centreville Academy (4-1) hosts Silliman Institute on Monday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m.
WCCA girls 41, ACCS 22
WOODVILLE — The Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams used a surprisingly big second quarter to defeat the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels 41-22 Tuesday night for their first win of the season.
This was indeed a rare win for WCCA’s varsity girls’ team over a Melanie Hall-coached ACCS Lady Rebels squad. And to do so in the Lady Rebels’ season opener made it even more special for the Lady Rams.
And perhaps WCCA took a page out of Hall’s playbook when it comes to pressure defense as it outscored the Lady Rebels 11-1 in the second quarter to take an 18-9 lead into halftime. The Lady Rams continued to add to their lead in the second half. They outscored ACCS 9-3 in the third quarter and 14-10 in the fourth quarter.
Geri Brumfield led the Lady Rebels with 10 points while the next high scorer was Brooke Collier with fourth points.
ACCS (0-1) plays at the Brookhaven Academy Tournament next Monday and Tuesday. WCCA (1-3) plays at Cathedral High School today at 6 p.m.
