FERRIDAY — Trojans came up short in both boys and girls basketball season openers for the Louisiana High School Athletics Association season at West Monroe High Rebels.
But the season still looks bright for Ferriday.
The West Monroe Lady Rebels won 74-42 over the visiting Lady Trojans in the season opener on Monday night.
Ferriday was led by Shekayla Miller with 13 points. Tierra Spurs and Aliyah Gray each scored eight points.
Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron said even though the Lady Trojans lost the game, she was still proud of some aspects of Ferriday’s play.
“We never gave up and that was one of the things that I stressed before we played,” Abron said. “We wanted to compete and be more of a competitive team this year.”
On Ferriday’s upcoming schedule, the Lady Trojans will play in five tournaments. The first tournament is on Nov. 25-26 at Wossman High School. Abron said the importance of the tournaments is because of the power point system.
“The more games you win, the more points you have and that’s how they (LHSAA) rank us every year,” Abron said.
Other games to look forward to on the Lady Trojans schedule are the Class 2A District 2 games. Ferriday will face Rayville, the defending District 2 champions, twice in the season (Jan. 14 and Feb. 4). The Lady Trojans will also face rival Vidalia Lady Vikings twice in the season (Dec. 17 and Jan. 24).
The Lady Trojans next game is tomorrow at 6 p.m. against the Franklin Parish Lady Patriots in Winnsboro, Louisiana.
Ferriday High Boys Basketball
West Monroe Rebels won 78-36 in the boys basketball game over the Trojans on Monday night.
Trojans Head Coach George Barnes said he likes playing the Rebels early in the season because it shows him what the Trojans strengths and weaknesses are moving forward in the season.
“I don’t think the score indicated the game as a whole,” Barnes said. “We put ourselves in the hole early, and it was too much to come out. They were too big and strong for us.”
Derrick Johnson led the Trojans with 10 points and Pamarion Watson was second with eight points.
The Trojans will travel on Friday night to Franklin Parish Patriots, a Class 4A team. Before tomorrow night’s game, the Patriots played in two back-to-back games, one on Monday against Caldwell Parish and another on Tuesday against Richwood.
Barnes said he’s throwing the Trojans out there to see what they will have moving forward in the season.
“I think the whole year is going to be a promising year but we have to be tested to see what our weaknesses and our strengths are,” Barnes said. “When it gets time for district, I think it’s going to make us a better team.”
On the Trojans’ roster, there is only one senior player. The other players are a mix between juniors, sophomores and freshmen. Barnes said the future is promising for the Trojans and he looks forward to seeing the Trojans pull off some surprising things against some teams.
Tip off for tomorrow’s game is at 7:30 p.m. at Franklin Parish.
