FERRIDAY — The Ferriday High Trojans come into the Louisiana High School Athletics Association Class 2A as the No. 1 seeded team.
“It’s a great accomplishment but it really doesn’t mean anything unless we bring the hardware home,” Trojans Head Coach, Stanley Smith said. “You have to make sure you cross your t’s and dot your I’s because everyone is coming to knock you off because you’re the No. 1 seed.”
Last season, the Trojans were one win way from playing in the Class 2A championship game. The Amite High Magnet Warriors defeated the Trojans, 44-20 in the semifinal.
Ferriday (9-1) won the District 2-2A outright for this season and are on a nine-game winning streak going into Friday night’s home playoff game against Vinton High Lions. At Melz Field, the Trojans have won every game, boasting a perfect 5-0 record.
In the last five games of the regular season, the Trojans held opponents to under 10 points. Smith said the Trojans still need to fix some things before Friday’s game.
“On offense, we’re trying to fine tune carrying out our blocking assignments and making the proper reads,” Smith said. “Defensively, we’re trying to fine tune our tackles, running to the ball and eliminating penalties.”
Vinton (4-5) comes into the first round playoff game as the No. 32 seed. The Lions are on a two-game losing streak.
Smith said the Lions are running a spread-type of offense and they’re throwing the ball. Smith added the Lions defense has brought more pressure to opposing quarterbacks.
“To stop the Lions pressure, we have to make sure we understand our blocking assignments,” Smith said.
The two teams faced last season in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. The Trojans won 54-0 en route to a semifinal finish.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday at Melz Field at Ferriday High School.
