CLINTON, La. — Adams County Christian School junior running back/linebacker Corey Sewell scored touchdowns on both offense and defense as the No. 6 seed Rebels upset the No. 3 seed Silliman Institute Wildcats 23-6 Friday night in the quarterfinals of the MAIS Class 5A Playoffs.
Sewell’s first touchdown came on defense and it was quite a unique one. Yohan Thompson had Silliman quarterback Brock Berthelot in the grasp and Berthelot tried to throw the ball. It ended up in the hands of Sewell, who was in the end zone at the time of the interception with 6:10 to go in the second quarter. D.J. Stampley ran in for the two-point conversion to give ACCS an 8-0 lead.
Then with time running down in the second quarter, Stampley threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Tripp Cotten with nine seconds left. Stampley then threw a two-point conversion pass to VJ Knight for a 16-0 Rebels lead at halftime.
“We were good in all three facets,” ACCS head coach David King said. “Special teams and defense played good. Offense, we moved the ball well.
Unfortunately, the Rebels were dealt a big blow when Stampley went down with an injury midway through the second quarter and was unable to return. Before that, he was 4-for-7 passing for 40 yards with one touchdown, had 16 carries for 104 yards, and had three tackles and one sack on defense.
“It wasn’t anything malicious. D.J. was injured on a freak play,” King said. “Our boys stepped it up because they didn’t want to let him down. Injuries are part of the game, but I haven’t been through anything like this.”
With 7:55 go in the fourth quarter, Sewell scored on a 27-yard run and Jasin Wesberry’s extra point gave the Rebels a 23-0 lead. Silliman (8-3) scored on a five-yard pass from Berthelot to Jack Jackson with 5:55 remaining.
Sewell finished with 86 yards on five carries and led the team in tackles with four.
As for Sewell’s performance, King said, “Corey was like the rest of them. They were a bunch of warriors. Silliman has a good team. A lot of speed. They’re well-coached. We weren’t going to be denied.”
King then added, “Everyone that wore an ACCS uniform tonight took part in that victory.”
Claven Dunbar also came up big on defense with two interceptions.
ACCS (9-3) will host No. 10 seed Starkville Academy in the semifinals Friday at 7 p.m. The Volunteers upset No. 2 seed Lamar School 24-22 Friday night.
Wayne Academy 26,
Cathedral 14
WAYNESBORO — The No. 6 seed Cathedral High School Green Wave racked up over 300 yards of total offense, but a rough first half eventually proved to be too much to overcome in a 26-14 loss to the No. 3 seed Wayne Academy Jaguars Friday night in the quarterfinals of the MAIS Class 4A Playoffs.
“We had too many mistakes in the first half and ran out of time in the second half,” Cathedral head coach Chuck Darbonne said. “They were able to keep churning up first downs. They hit a big pass play on us right before halftime and we were down 20-0.”
Wayne Academy (5-5) led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter before scoring two touchdowns to take that 20-0 lead into the half. Cathedral (7-5) scored two quick touchdowns in the third quarter to make it a 20-14 game before the Jaguars scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
“The second half, we came out and played with some passion. But we came up a couple of plays short,” Darbonne said.
J.T. Taylor completed 14 of 26 passes for 195 yards while J.C. Harris had 15 carries for 126 yards and one touchdown. Bryson Moore had nine carries for 36 yards and one TD. Ben White had 11 catches for 166 yards. K.J. Washington and Jalen Moore led the Green Wave defense with eight tackles each.
Winona Christian School 45, Centreville Academy 26
WINONA — The No. 10 seed Centreville Academy Tigers saw their season come to an end Friday night as they were upended by the No. 2 seed Winona Christian School Stars 45-26 in the quarterfinals of the MAIS Class 3A Playoffs.
Winona Christian (9-2) led 14-6 after one quarter of play, 27-12 at halftime, and 39-18 at the end of the third quarter. No other information on this game was available.
Centreville Academy finished with an overall record of 5-7.
Prairie View Academy 60, WCCA 20
WOODVILLE — Wilkinson County Christian Academy’s first-ever appearance in the MAIS 8-Man Playoffs didn’t last very long. Prairie View Academy made sure of that.
Jacob Farrar had three touchdown passes and two touchdown runs to lead the No. 6 seed Spartans to a 60-20 upset win over the No. 3 seed Rams Friday night in the quarterfinals 8-Man Class 1A Playoffs.
Prairie View Academy (8-3) racked up 527 total yards of offense while holding WCCA (9-3) to just 246 total yards and forcing four turnovers. Roderick Bailey scored all three touchdowns for the Rams as he had 10 carries for 122 yards.
The Spartans scored 32 straight points to end the first quarter and outscored the Rams 28-14 in the second quarter to take a 40-point lead into halftime.
Magee 33, Jefferson County 24
FAYETTE — The Magee High School Trojans went into the MHSAA Class 3A South State Playoffs as the No. 4 seed out of Region 8-3A despite being ranked No. 5 in all of Class 3A.
None of that seemed to matter to Magee as it knocked Region 7-3A champion and No. 1 seed Jefferson County High School out of the postseason with a 33-24 win over the Tigers in a first-round game Friday night. No other information on the game was available.
Jefferson County finished 6-5 overall while Magee improved to 9-3 and will move on to the second round.
Columbia 41, Franklin County 0
COLUMBIA — The Columbia High School Wildcats remained undefeated as the Region 8-3A champions shut out the Region 7-3A No. 4 seed Franklin County High School Bulldogs 41-0 Friday night in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A South State Playoffs.
What was unusual about this game was the score was so lopsided that a running clock was used for the entire second half. What wasn’t was that the top-ranked Wildcats’ defense held the Bulldogs to just 115 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers.
Franklin County ended its season with an overall record of 2-9 while Columbia improved to 11-0 overall.
West Marion 56, Wilkinson County 6
FOXWORTH — Wilkinson County High School took an early lead, but West Marion High School reminded the Wildcats why they are one of the best teams in all of Class 3A as the Trojans rolled to a 56-6 win in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A South State Playoffs.
West Marion (11-1) scored 14 points in the first quarter and put the game away with a 21-point second quarter for a 35-6 halftime lead. The Trojans would score another 21 points after halftime.
Wilkinson County finished its season with an overall record of 3-8.
