VIDALIA — On Tuesday at Vidalia High School, three Miss-Lou Youth Football teams were crowned as Super Bowl champions.

8 and Under Super Bowl XI

Two years ago, the Roux 61 Steelers were 0-8. Last year, they finished as runner-ups in the 8 and under Super Bowl.

In the 8 and under Super Bowl XI, the Roux 61 Steelers won 26-12 over the Johnny’s Pizza Colts.

Roux 61 Steelers Head Coach Terrell Fife said there were two goals this season: Go undefeated and win the Super Bowl.

“We accomplished those things and we really practiced hard,” Terrell said. “They were a great team in uplifting each other. We never really had any doubt that this was going to be the outcome. We felt like we earned it and we accomplished our goals.

The Steelers scored the first touchdown of the game on a run-pass option. In this play, the quarterback fakes the handoff and throws to the running back on a crossing-route across the field. Tayton Fife ran the pass for a 35-yard touchdown.

Roux 61 Steelers Head Coach Terrell Fife said it was an advanced play for an 8 and under team.

“I think we ran it to perfection,” Terrell said. “We were very happy we completed it the first play of the game. I felt like that set the tone early.”

Bentley Thompson ran the ball for three touchdowns for the Steelers. The longest touchdown he ran for was 40-yards. Terrell said Thompson was the most effective runner on his team.

Mason King led the Steelers with eight tackles.

Lane Davis, Thompson and Tayton each had four tackles. Skylar Hamilton, Christian Mitchell and Jayden Jefferson each obtained three tackles.

Johnny’s Pizza Colts lone touchdown scorer was Ayden Bell, who ran for a 15-yard touchdown and a 10-yard touchdown. Bell was 5-years old during the season and just turned six. In total, Bell obtained 10 to

14 touchdowns in the Miss-Lou Youth Football season.

Colts Head Coach Bubba Lee said Bell had never played football.

“He’s tremendously fast and as far as the game he learned how to read the field, zones and used his speed as ability,” Lee said.

Lee said he started the season with 11 kids but only six kids were left going into the MLYF playoffs.

“They stepped up tremendously,” Lee said. “They were the first group of boys who I have coached who played selfless football about the team. They played positions they never played and they stepped up in whatever they had to do to put the team first.”

10 and Under Super Bowl XIV

The State Farm-Adam Bryant Agent Lawdogs won 20-6 over the Camo Construction Colts.

In the third from scrimmage for the Lawdogs, Demarcus Mitchell ran the ball straight up the middle for a 60-yard touchdown.

Lawdogs Head Coach Frank Duson said after Mitchell scored the touchdown the Lawdogs played loose.

Donald Franklin also scored two touchdowns for the Lawdogs, one on a 35-yard interception and the other on a 65-yard run. Marlon Ramirez also ran for a 3-yard PAT after a Lawdogs touchdown.

“It’s nothing more exciting than watching the boys do something that gives them something to thrive on. It’s unexplainable in a lot of ways,” Duson said. “I love every aspect in dealing with young people.”

The Camo Construction Colts lone touchdown scorer was Rankin Wiggins. Wiggins ran the ball for a 25-yard touchdown. Lee said Wiggins was the first person to score a touchdown against the Lawdogs in two seasons.

“The Colts came through and played the best game they have ever played,” Lee said. “I had that team for four years.”

In the fourth quarter of the game, Wiggins broke his foot. Lee said it devastated the other players but they knew it’s all part of the game.

During the fourth quarter, the Colts were driving down the field and were 10-yards away from scoring. Then, the clock went out and the game was over.

“I will remember that my team played with a lot of heart,” Lee said. “The Colts played with a lot of selflessness and heart. We start doing conditioning drills and unpadded practices in July. The kids come out voluntarily and they work to get better. They put everyone on the team first and not themselves.”

13 and Under Super Bowl XIV

In the final Super Bowl played on Tuesday night at Vidalia High, the Tensas State Bank Bulldogs won 19-0, shutting out the McDonald Collision Razorbacks. In the game, Elmari Lewis ran for a 55-yard touchdown. Kortlin Harris ran for a 36-yard touchdown and Leroy Williams ran for a 54-yard touchdown.

Duson said the defense came out and played hard in the Super Bowl game.

“We had some key tackles and they weren’t letting the run get off,” Duson said. “It really helped us out that the big men up front did their job.”

With the victory in the 10 and under Super Bowl, Duson won two Super Bowls on Tuesday night.

“It’s exciting to watch those kids achieve something in that arena under the lights,” Duson said. “A victory like that and to go and win it gives them that extra motivation to go to that next level. We have a lot of players who will go onto here from the junior high.”

On the Bulldogs team, Duson said he has players from Natchez, Sicily Island, Ferriday and Vidalia. Duson added his team is like a family.

“Family oriented is what I teach,” Duson said. “I don’t teach white, black or you’re better than me. We’re all equal and it takes team effort to win. I think that works better and you can inspire a young man to think the skies are the limit. It works for them and it helps them in all aspects of life.”
