Adams County is ready for a fresh start

Two days after voters slowly begin to get back to their daily lives without the constant drumbeat of campaign ads, we all know one thing.

Adams County is ready for a fresh start.

With the election behind us and the rainbow of campaign signs littering our town soon gone — we hope — more than half of the county’s elected offices will be led by new faces.

With varying degrees of experience, those in charge of managing the circuit clerk’s office, tax assessor’s office and tax collector’s office will be new.

So, too, will three out the five positions on the Adams County Board of Supervisors.

Democrat Wes Middleton, Republican Kevin Wilson and Democrat Warren Gaines unseated incumbents District One Supervisor Mike Lazarus, District Two Supervisor David Carter and District Five Supervisor Calvin Butler.

Of the five positions on the board, Angela Hutchins in district three and Rickey Gray in district four are the two to be re-elected by their constituents.

Tuesday’s results offer the board a rare opportunity to stop, take stock and make the changes necessary to move Natchez and Adams County forward.

Voters sent a clear message via the ballot box that they believe such change is critical.

We hope Gray and Hutchins will be willing to listen openly and consider the fresh ideas and new proposals offered by the three new faces on the board.

Each new board member brings a unique set of experiences and expertise that could bring about the change voters are demanding.

Only by listening first and then acting second, will leaders avoid jumping to conclusions and making assumptions.

Ultimately, each board member has one vote and will need at least two more votes to pursue whatever vision they have for our community.

Only by working together will they be able to move Adams County forward.
