FERRIDAY — After starting the season on a four-game losing streak, the Delta Charter Storm won their first game of the season last Friday night against Louisiana High School Athletic Association District 2 Class 1A foe Sicily Island Tigers, 20-8.

In the game against the Tigers, Chandler Harrison led the team on defense with 17 tackles. Tre Griffin rushed for two touchdowns and 173 yards.

“I feel like getting the first win was a boost for us,” Harrison said about winning the team’s first game of the season. “We worked hard all week for it. It felt like it was payday for us. We felt like we got the monkey off of our backs.”

On Friday the Storm will travel to Delhi High School Bears (2-2, 0-2 District 2) for the third LHSAA District 2 game of the season.

In the District 2 standings, Delta Charter is tied for fourth place with St. Frederick at 1-1.

Storm Head Coach Blake Wheeler said Friday’s game against the Bears is important to making the playoffs.

“The Bears are big, athletic and they’re a good football team,” Wheeler said about the Bears. “They have had a couple of rough weeks, but they played against some pretty good opponents. It’s going to be a challenge, but we’re excited about it.”

To prepare for the Bears, the Storm practiced three out of four days in pads. Wheeler said practicing in pads is going to help increase the level of physicality.

“I think it showed in our tackling this past week,” Wheeler said about the level of physicality. “We tackled well and we’re going to continue to make an emphasis on tackling.”

During Tuesday’s practice, Harrison said he has focused on a saying by Wheeler: practice like we play.

“We have to execute everything during practice so we can do the same in the game,” Harrison said about practicing like it was on a Friday night.

Delhi High School comes into Friday’s game on a two-game losing streak. The Bears lost to Ouachita Christian High School, 49-0. The Bears are 0-1 at home.

“We’re just excited to go up there and play,” Wheeler said about Friday’s game against Delhi. “It’s a good place to play football and we’re excited about the challenge.”

The game starts at 7 p.m. Friday at Delhi High School.
