NATCHEZ — A Natchez man wanted on a warrant for assaulting police officers in Natchez was apprehended early Friday morning in Hattiesburg, officials said.

Tyrell White, 23, was apprehended in Hattiesburg at approximately 1 a.m. Friday, said Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten.

Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said police had received tips on White’s whereabouts that they had shared with Hattiesburg Police and U.S. Marshals.

“They went to the residence and he was not there,” Armstrong said.

However, after a tip from a viewer who saw White featured on a television news cast highlighting Adams County’s most wanted suspects, officials were able to apprehend White at a hospital early Friday morning where he was with a patient, Patten said.

“I am glad he has been arrested, and yes we have all been searching for him to try to bring him into custody,” Armstrong said.

Patten said White also is wanted for questioning in connection to several recent shootings in Adams County.

“We know a lot of these shootings are associated to rumors, and things he’s doing,” Patten said last month in a plea for the public’s help in locating White.

Patten said White had been on the loose since he had failed to show up for Circuit Court on charges of three counts of assaulting police officers that stemmed from an August 2018 incident in which three narcotics officers were having a meal at Shoney’s in Natchez and said they witnessed what they believed to be a drug transaction in the parking lot.

When trying to apprehend White, he assaulted three officers, Patten said.

“They got him in to custody and arrested him and then he never came back to trial,” Patten said. “He skipped out on Circuit Court on this, so we actually have judge-signed warrants dated 23 Aug. 2018 for him for contempt of court.”

“Our guys have really, really been working to try to locate him,” Armstrong said. “Law enforcement has done an outstanding job running down this thing.”

Armstrong said the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the Natchez Police Departments are still working in collaboration.

“We had a meeting this week with the sheriff’s office to compare notes and share information,” Armstrong said.

Patten said he is happy to have White in custody.

“I’m really glad this young man has been captured and maybe justice will be served,” Patten said. “His name is associated with a lot of other crimes and hopefully he will be prosecuted or it will be put to rest.”

Patten thanked the U.S. Marshal service for assisting in the arrest.

“He has been on the run for months now,” Patten said. “My hope is now that we have him in custody that the justice system does its job.

Patten also thanked citizens who provided information that helped officials make the arrest.

“All the citizens who helped us on this — not only on this one but other ones as well, who called in tips that led to us bringing this suspect and others to justice — these are the types of efforts that are needed in order to bring peace to our community,” Patten said.
